Jacquemus Le Chiquito

Simon Porte Jacquemus started his own label in 2009, when he was only 19 years old. Named after his mother (Jacquemus was her maiden name), he launched it as an ode to her a year after her tragic death. Simon had just moved to Paris from Mallemort, a small farming village where he grew up, and dropped out of the École Supérieure des Arts et Techniques de la Mode. To fund his designs, he took a job as a sales assistant at the Comme des Garçons store on Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré. Paying a curtain-maker €100 to sew his first piece, a skirt with no pockets or buttons (he could not afford them), he started his line. From there, Simon showed his first collection at Paris Fashion Week in 2012, as one of the youngest designers ever to do so, and quickly became famous for his accessories.

More about Jacquemus Le Chiquito

Jacquemus debuted the Le Chiquito handbag in its Fall 2017 Ready-to-Wear show, making the brand known for playing with scale. A mini bag, the Jacquemus Le Chiquito is barely large enough to hold its wearers AirPods. On Jacquemus’s Instagram account, which Simon runs himself, he challenges his followers, asking: “What would you fit inside?”

Instantly a hit, carried by the likes of Rihanna, Beyoncé, and Kim Kardashian, Jacquemus has since released additional Le Chiquito sizes. Most recently, in Fall/Winter 2019, the Le Petit Chiquito. Shrunken to the tiniest possible proportions, it cannot even fit the brand’s entire name (featuring only a ‘J’ on its front) and can maybe hold a couple of yellow (Simon’s personal favorite) Tic Tacs. It comes with a long strap, so it is customizable and can be styled more like jewelry. Otherwise, only a pinky can be looped through its top handle.

Priced between $258 and $768, Jacquemus’s Le Chiquito styles are not the most affordable designer buy (especially considering they cannot fit much inside). Cannot help yourself? We do not blame you! Shop vintage and get the Jacquemus Le Chiquito bag for less.
